Juntos Transformando Basural a Jardin! Transforming Local Dump Into Garden!!

Etapa I - Limpieza...... Stage I - CleanUp

Dear Friends in every corner of our Peru and the world, welcome too another entry on our humble but beloved blog, which always aspires to bring you all closer to the work and community we love, and also to invite you to be part of our activities, challenges, achievements, difficulties, experiences both beautiful and tough, and our big dreams. 

Pues con el alma hinchada hasta nomás de orgullo y agradecimiento, les cuento a todos y todas que con ayuda de nuestros chicos y chicas del proyecto, y de un grupo de sus mamás y papás logramos juntar y sacar toda la basura que llevaba acumulada años a solo pasos de nuestra casita y de las casas de nuestros niños y vecinos. Ya la verdad la cantidad de moscas y basura que volaban hacia nuestras casas era insoportable, y viendo a los chicos constantemente expuestos a tantas porquerias y enfermedades en potencia, decidimos organizar a nuestra comunidad LCDM en nuestro barrio y de una vez por todas limpiar ese basural y transformarlo en un jardin que de vida, salud y belleza a todos en nuestro barrio, especialmente a los niños y niñas.

And so, with my soul completely swollen with pride and gratitude, let me tell you all that with the help of the kids of the project and a group of their parents, we were able to clean up all the garbage that had been accumulating in a vacant lot over the years, only a few steps from our house and the from the houses of our kids and neighbors. The truth is that the flies, stench, and wind-scattered garbage that reached our houses was intolerable. Seeing the kids constantly exposed to so much filth and potential disease, we decided to organize our LCDM community and our neighborhood, clean up the dump once and for all, and transform it into a garden that adds life, health, and beauty to our neighborhood and especially to the lives of the children.

El trabajo de juntar toda esa basura fue muy duro porque no solo tuvimos que tragar mucho polvo y soportar una mezcla de olores intolerables, si no que tambien tuvimos que trabajar bajo un sol veraniego Chinchano, de esos que te sacan el ancho sin darte tregua. Por eso quiero dar estas ENORMES gracias a los papás y mamás que ayudaron, y a todos y cada uno y una de mis chicos y chicas desde los mas pequeños hasta los mas grandes por hacer este trabajo junto a Andy y a mi sin ni una sola vez quejarse, y mas bien hacerlo con tanta alegria y entusiasmo. Ustedes mis chicos y chicas son mis HEROES y HEROINAS, por que nadie quiere hacer ese trabajo tan desagradable y ustedes vinieron a nuestra ayuda junto a sus palas y baldes tan llenos de amor y ganas de transformar este nido de enfermedades en un hermoso oasis lleno de verde, vida, belleza, y salud. Gracias desde mi amor mas agradecido para ustedes. Gracias a su trabajo y a nuestro esfuerzo compartido tenemos ahora un jardin para embellecer los dias de todos los que pasen por ahi.

The job of putting all that garbage together into piles was very difficult, not only because of all the dust we had to swallow and the blend of disgusting odors, but also because we had to work in Chincha's fierce and relentless summer sun. For this reason, I want to say an ENORMOUS thank you to the moms and dad that helped out, and to each and every one of my girls and boys, from the littlest ones to the biggest ones, for doing this work alongside Andy and me without once complaining and in fact with so much joy and enthusiasm. You, my boys and girls, are my HEROES and HEROINES, because nobody wants to do such unpleasant work and you all came to help us, with your shovels and buckets, so full of love and desire to transform that breeding ground of disease into a gorgeous oasis green with health, life, and beauty. Thank you from the most grateful love I have for you. Thanks to your work and our shared efforts, we now have a garden to bring beauty to the day of every person who passes by.

Para Andy y para mi fue lindo trabajar a su lado sabiendo que juntos estabamos creando un nuevo lugar sano, bello y seguro para ustedes nuestro amados chicos y chicas. Lo mas maravilloso de todo este proceso dificil de limpiar ese basural y trabajar para concientizar a todos sobre la importancia de no crear focos de infecciones y enfermedades fue saber que cada esfuerzo suyo y nuestro estaba empapado, dedicado y entregado totalmente al bien de ustedes. Todo lo hecho en conjunto para desaparecer ese basural fue pensado absolutamente en ustedes y en nuestro querido barrio....por que ustedes se merecen belleza, salud, vida y esta transformacion lograda con sus manos y las nuestras les confirma que ustedes se merecen zonas verdes donde puedan respirar y jugar sana y seguramente.

For me and for Andy it was a pleasure to work by your side, knowing that together we were creating a new space that was healthy, safe, and attractive for you all, our beloved boys and girls. Throughout this whole difficult process of cleaning up the dump and working to raise everyone's awareness about the importance of avoiding public health hazards, the most wondrous thing has been knowing that every effort made was totally soaked in and dedicated to your own well-being. Everything we did together to eliminate the garbage dump we did exclusively with you and our beloved neighborhood in mind. . . because you all merit beauty, health, and life. This transformation, achieved with your hands and with our, confirms to you all that you deserve green areas where you can breath and play safely.

Y asi poco a poco y con muuuucho trabajo la transformacion empezo y poco a poco tambien fueron nuestros esfuerzos dando sus humildes pero significativos frutos. Desde vecinos que hicieron un compromiso con ellos y nosotros y no volvieron a lanzar basura, hasta vecinos que nos donaron plantitas de su chacra, a vecinos que nos ayudan a cuidar que nadie vuelva a intentar crear un basural ahi. Nuestro barrio es mas saludable con un jardin y yo confio con todo mi ser que nuestros vecinos no permitiran que se vuelva a basurear a nuestro barrio. Gracias vecinos y vecinas por ayudarnos a cuidar el jardin!

And so, little by little, and with LOTS of work, the transformation began, and little by little, we began seeing the humble but significant fruits of our labor . . . from the neighbors who made a commitment with us and with themselves to stop dumping garbage, to the neighbors who donated plants from their own gardens, to the neighbors who continue to help make sure nobody else tries to keep dumping in the area. Our neighborhood is healthier with a garden and I trust with my whole being that our neighbors will not allow our neighborhood to be trashed again. Thank you neighbors for helping us take care of the garden!

Mil gracias Manuel por toda tu ayuda limpiando, regando, y cuidando el jardin. Tu ayuda y la de tu mamá desde el comienzo ha sido muy valiosa vida mia. Gracias! Tambien gracias a Luis, Joao, Arumi, Jair, Delanny, y el grupo enorme de chicos y chicas que se dedicaron a ayudarnos a regar mientras otros pintaban, y otro grupo limpiaba. Gracias a todos y todas!

Tambien quiero agradecer a Luis, encargado de medio ambiente el la muni de Sunampe, por ayudar a conseguir que la maquina venga a llevarse la basura que entre todos juntamos y preparamos para ser recogida. La verdad es que me costo mucho trabajo lograr que nos escucharan y nos enviaran la maquina recogedora de basura, pero despues de varias visitas a la municipalidad, de una infinidad de llamadas y mensajes, y la presentacion de un oficio formal de nuestra parte junto a mas de 100 firmas que logramos recolectar de todos los vecinos pidiendo que nos ayuden a sacar esa basura, nos enviaron la maquina y pudimos asi sacar los montones de basura y empezar el proceso de convertir ese espacio en un jardin. Luis fue la persona de contacto y le agradecemos por haber tenido la intencion de ayudarnos y por haber intercedido hasta donde pudo para hacer que la maquina llegue a llevarse la basura. Trabajar juntos para concientizar a la comunidad sobre la salud ambiental y los peligros de crear basurales es muy importante y es deber y trabajo de la municipalidad y de todos los ciudadanos cuidar la salud publica y no poner en riesgo el bien de sus ciudadanos mas pequeños y vulnerables. Esperamos que el camion de la basura distrital llegue sin falta en los dias programados a recoger la basura en nuestro distrito para asi no contribuir al problema de manejo y deshecho de basura. Gracias Luis, y esperamos continues haciendo esfuerzos por desarrollar iniciativas locales con el apoyo de tus superiores, que ayuden a concientizar, educar y solucionar los serios problemas que actualmente amenazan la salud ambiental y publica en nuestro distrito.

Mostrandole a Luis, encargado de salud ambiental y publica en la municipalidad distrital, el estado de la pampa, y como ya entre todos habiamos limpiado el basural y dejado 5 montones listos y organizados solo para que se los lleve la maquina.

Showing Luis, the district official in charge of environment and public health, the state of the vacant lot, and how among all of us we had cleaned up the garbage and left it ready to be picked up by the machine. 

I would also like to thank Luis, the environmental official from the municipality of Sunampe, for helping us get heavy machinery to come and scoop up the garbage that we all piled up and got ready for pickup. The truth is that it took a lot of work to get anyone in the local government to listen and take action, but after several visits to the town hall, an infinity of calls and messages, and presenting a formal petition signed by more than 100 people, they finally sent us a front-end loader, and we were able to get rid of the piles of garbage and begin the process of converting the area into a garden. Luis was our contact person and we appreciate his intention to help us and for intervening as far as he was able in order to get the machine to come and clean up. It is extremely important for us to work together to raise awareness in the community about the dangers of illegal dumping, and it is the responsibility both of the municipality and all of us citizens to protect our public health and not risk the wellbeing of the smallest and most vulnerable among us. We hope that the garbage truck that serves our district arrives regularly and as expected according to schedule, in order to avoid exacerbating the problem of waste management. Thank you Luis, and we hope that you continue,with the support of your superiors, making efforts to develop, local efforts to help raise awareness, educate people, and begin solving the serious problems that currently threaten public health and the environment in our district.

Despues que la maquina se llevo la basura, todos los chicos y chicas ayudaron a regar bien la tierra para que pueda mojarse y suavizarce antes de empezar a plantar....Esto de regar tambien fue un trabajón ya que teniamos que cargar baldes desde la séquia para poder regar y dejar bien mojado el suelo que tan maltratado quedo despues de años de recibir productos toxicos y infinidad de porquerias...pero nuestros chicos y chicas fueron un@s campeon@s y entre todos dejaron este espacio listo para recibir nuevas semillas...nueva vida.....Gracias muchach@s por dejar bien regada a la mamapachita para que pueda hacer nacer lindas vidas de su cuerpo. Gracias MamáPacha por seguir viviendo y dandonos tanto apesar de todo lo que te hacemos.!!!!

Etapa III - Preparando el Suelo.....Stage III - Preparing The Soil

After the machine took away the garbage, all the kids helped wet the ground thoroughly so that it would be moist and soft enough for planting. . .  this was a quite a task since we had to carry buckets from the irrigation channel. . . it was necessary to bring plenty of water and leave the soil nice and wet after it had received for so many years only filth and toxic substances . . .  but our kids were champions and together they left this space ready to receive new seeds. . . new life. . . Thank you guys and girls for doing such a good job watering our mother Earth, so that beautiful new lives might spring from its body. Thank you, Earth Mother, for staying alive and giving us so much in spite of the way we treat you.

Etapa IV - Plantando el Cerco.....Stage IV - Building the Fence!

Etapa V - Plantitas a la Tierra!!! Yeyyyyyy!!!

Despues de varias semanas de trabajo por fin pudimos llegar a este punto tan esperado, el momento de abrir la tierra y pedirle a nuestra mamá grande que permita que la vida pueda crecer de su cuerpo en este humildisimo jardin forjado por todos. Nuestros chicos y chicas y nosotros estabamos emocionadisimos y juntos iniciamos este bellisimo proceso de plantar nueva vida juntos con todo el amor, esperanza y fe en nuestros corazones de que estas plantitas pequeñas se convertiran un dia con amor y cuidado en arboles que daran sombra, vida, salud, belleza y oxigeno a todos los niños y niñas de nuestro barrio. Nuestros chicos aprendieron con Andy como encontrar los contornos o diferentes niveles en ese terreno y asi se inicio la etapa de siembra.

After many weeks of work, at last we arrived at this long-awaited moment, the time to open the earth and ask that our great mother allow life to grow from her body in this very humble garden forged by all of us. We and our boys and girls were very excited and together we began the wonderful process of planting new life together with all the love, hope, an faith in our hearts that these little plants would one day, with care and devotion, become trees that give shade, life, health, beauty, and oxygen to all the boys and girls of our neighborhood. In the first stage of planting, the kids learned how to find contour lines on the ground.

 Y una a una las plantitas fueron llegando y cuando ya no teniamos mas plantitas y pensabamos que no tendriamos suficientes para cubrir el jardin, nuestros heroes locales, nuestros queridos amigos y vecinos Nelly y Julian, de la viña El Jazmin, en Sunampe, nos llenaron la vida de alegria y agradecimiento donandonos mas de 40 arboles de nispero japones y una hermoso arbol de platano. Salvados...nos sentimos salvados y escuchados por la gran mamá vida cuando tan generosamente nuestros amigos Nelly y Julian nos invitaron a su chacra a llevar cuanta plantita necesitaramos. MILES, Y MILES de gracias Nelly y Julian por su amistad, por su bondad con nosotros, por sus hermosas plantitas, y por ayudarnos a sacar adelante este jardin que tanto trabajo nos ha costado. Son unos verdaderos heroes verdes ustedes....GRACIAS!!!

And one by one, the plants arrived, and just we we had no more plants left and we thought we would never have enough to cover the garden, our local heroes, our dear neighbors and friends Nelly and Julian from El Jazmin Vineyard in Sunampe, filled our lives with happiness and gratitude by donating more than 40 saplings of Japanese Loquat and a beautiful banana tree. Saved! We felt saved and heard by the great mother life when our friends so generously invited us to their vineyard to take as many plants as we needed. Thousands and thousands of thanks Nelly and Julian for your goodness and friendship, for your beautiful plants, and for helping us to make this garden we have worked so hard for prosper! You are true green heroes . . . THANK YOU!!

Increiblemente, despues de tanto y tan exigente trabajo, y despues de tanta basura e interminables desechos recogidos, nuestro amado y hermoso jardin fue dando vida, fue creciendo y fue llenando de esperanza, alegria, y hermosura nuestros dias. Pueden creer que esta belleza naciente era hace solo semanas un basural lleno de plasticos, excremento, escombros, materiales toxicos, animales muertos y demas???

Incredibly, after so much demanding work, and after such interminable amounts of trash to be picked up, our beautiful and much loved garden began to give life, growing and filling up our days with hope, joy and beauty. Can you believe that only a few weeks ago, this growing beauty was a dump filled with plastic, excrement, rubble, toxic substances, dead animals, and more?

 Quiero dar muchas gracias a los vecinos o personas que sin interes una mañanita muy tempranito dejaron en el jardincito de mi casa una bolsa llena de matitas de flores....no saben la alegria TAN grande que me dio encontrar esas flores y aun mas alegria senti cuando al empezar a plantarlas me di cuenta de que no eran unas cuantas matitas, si no casi 100 plantitas de flores. Llore de alegria y de un profundo agradecimiento a usted vecino o vecina que sin tener su nombre me lleno la vida de esperanza en la gente, en lo hermosos y generoso que podemos ser cuando decidimos hacer algo lindo por los demas. Gracias, miles de veces gracias, ya que sus flores fueron ese dia, y seran siempre tambien las flores de mi esperanza que crecen abundantes en mi cada dia. Aqui, bajo ese platano hermoso viven ahora algunas de sus buenas flores. Muchas gracias!

I would like to express many thanks to the anonymous neighbor who one morning very early  left a bag full of of flowering plants outside our door. . . you have no idea what GREAT JOY it gave me to find these flowers, and I felt even happier as I began to plant them and I realized it was not just a few plants but in fact nearly a hundred individual plants. I cried with joy and with a profound gratitude to you, unknown neighbor, who filled my life with faith in people, in how beautiful and generous we can be when we decide to do something noble for others. Thank you, a thousand times thank you, for your flowers were that day and will always be the blossoms of hope that grow abundantly inside me every day. Y poco a poco fueron llenandose de vida las paredes y las manos de nuestros queridos chicos fueron adornando cada rincon
And little by little the walls began to fill up with life as our kids' hand decorated every corner

Con una proyeccion de las fotos y videos para nuestros chicos de todas las etapas de esta transformacion verde, iniciamos la ultima etapa de nuestro jardin...que es una etapa sin fin en realidad, por que requiere cuidado continuo, riego, limpieza, y mucha dedicacion.

With a slideshow of pictures and video of all the stages of this green transformation, we began the last stage in creating the garden . . . which in reality is a never-ending stage, because it requires continuous maintenance, watering, cleaning, and plenty of dedication.

I know that for you it was also wonderful and at the same time very tough to do all that you did, even while you were ill . . . planting, cleaning, cutting bamboo, looking for materials, building the fence, the gates, watering, looking for tools, and helping raise awareness about garbage. . . we all thank you and love you more for loving our neighborhood as if it were your own and for working nonstop to give our boys and girls more beauty. . . thank you!

Y sin darnos cuenta, entre tanto trabajo, momentos lindos y mucho esfuerzo pasó un mes y medio desde que iniciamos el proceso de transformar el basural en este jardin....por ese trabajo, por la dedicacion de nuestros chicos y chicas, por el trabajar como si fueran los hombres y mujeres mas fuertes del mundo, por siempre venir a ayudarnos con amor y alegria, por ver en sus ojos propios lo que nosotros tambien veiamos, belleza y salud futura y por llegar cada dia dispuestos a construir este lugar lindo sin importar los sacrificios que teniamos que hacer....por haber venido a todos los talleres y aun asi venir despues a trabajar en el jardin.....por sus inagotables ganas de hacer esto juntos y darse a ustedes y a nuestro barrio algo hermoso hecho por sus manos.....por todo eso y mas, yo mis amados y amadas chicos y chicas, escribo esto, y ofrezco esta entrada a ustedes, para que los frutos de este, su trabajo, continuen creciendo y embelleciendo sus dias y los llene de orgullo por haber hecho algo maravilloso por nuestra comunidad siendo ustedes tan jovenes. Yo les rindo un homenaje de amor y agradecimiento con estas fotos, con estas insuficientes palabras....por que ustedes son gigantes para mi y esta entrada demuestra al mundo que mis ojos y mi alma no se equivocan al sentirlos y verlos como a un bosque lleno de corazones-arboles que tambien daran luminosos y hermosisimos frutos en el futuro. Para mi ustedes son, han sido siempre, y seran por la eternidad el jardin mas hermoso que me pueda dar la vida. Ustedes mis chicos y chicas estan plantados en mi amor para siempre y ahi seguiran creciendo en mi a donde vaya. Gracias por su trabajo, por su amor, y por ser luz viva en mi vida. Cuidense, quieranse mucho, valoren su amistad, cuiden nuestro jardincito que tanto nos costo a todos, y asegurense de siempre incluir a los pequeños que tambien trabajaron harto a su lado para tener un jardincito que crezca con ellos en el barrio. And without our noticing, what with so much hard work and so many marvelous moments, a month and half passed since we began the process of transforming the dump into this garden. And for all this dedicated work by all of you, our boys and girls . . .  for working like the strongest men and women in the world, for seeing in your own eyes what we also could see, all the beauty and future health. . . for showing up every day willing to build that place of beauty whatever the sacrifice . . . for coming to all of the workshops staying even afterwards to work in the garden . . . for your endless desire to do this together and and give yourselves and our neighborhood something beautiful made by your own hands. . .  for all this and more, I offer the writing of this entry to you all, so that the fruits of this, your own work, will continue growing and beautifying your days, filling you with the pride of having accomplished something marvelous for our community in spite of your young age. I offer you these photos and these insufficient words an homage of love and gratitude. . . because you kids are giants for me and this entry shows to the world that my eyes and my soul are not mistaken when they feel and see you as a forest full of heart-trees that will also give luminous and lovely fruits in the future. For me you are, you have always been, and will be for all eternity the most beautiful garden that life could ever give me. You my boys and girls are planted forever inside my love, and there you continue growing in me wherever I may go. Thank you for your work, for your love, and for being living lights in my life. Care for each other, love each other a lot, value your friendship, take care of the little garden that cost us all so much work, and make sure to always include the little ones, who also worked very hard at your sides to have a garden that will grow up with them in the neighborhood.
