My students and I are interested in all these photos! Here are some questions for you:

1) Why do you put "penca" in the mud? It looks like a cactus!

2) How many adobes have you made so far? When do you plan to finish?

3) What do you eat while you do all of that hard work?

Hello Marek, thanks for your questions...
1-Penca is a cactus..cactus is one of the ingredients used to help glue all the ingredients together (dirt/tierra, sand, cactus and straw)...penca makes the mud more manageable as well.
2- We have made 389 adobes (40 centimeters x 40 centimeters) pretty big, and 60 adobes (40 x 20) smaller ones. We need 1700 big ones and 300 small ones. I had projected to finish by the 5th of October if all went as planned, but given a few situations, we will probably finish now by the third week of October. It is only 3of us making adobes now and this is what is mainly keeping us behind schedule as well as my budget...
3- The first week I bought ingredients and Manuel´s daughter cooked for us. This week a neighbor actually donated the food we ate. We eat what we can buy, or what is given to us...these days I am looking for food donations...I am hoping another neighbor can share their food with us this week. Generally, we try to have rice, potatoes, pasta, carbs and proteins, and salads when we can...and tons of water.

I don´t actually own a camara so I always depend on friends letting me use their camaras so that I can take pictures, or they, to put up on my blog...I am hoping to raise funds in the future to buy a camara for my project.
Marek, on a slightly different note, I will be traveling to the states tomorrow, Sept. 8th and will be in the north east for two weeks...it would be great to meet you and your kids....I would love to talk to you personally about this recnstruction project and about an anti-violence campaing I am planning to kick off in november or december at the latest...today i visited your website and love the work you do with your kids...perhaps we can work together on a few ideas I have....my kids are helping me design a logo for my project and I will be taking their ideas in paper to the states...I hope we can meet up...I will check my email daily...please give your kids our regards...abrazos a todos y gracias!
